:-)
To finally round off the documentation of our South America trip, here are some of my photos from Peru (July 18th-25th)! We spent the majority of our time in Cusco, and from there we went on a day trip to Machu Picchu (stunning) via train. We also spent a wonderful last day in Lima but I didn't carry my camera with me and therefore have no photos.
While in Cusco, we didn't try a lot of traditional Peruvian food (e.g. guinea pig) although we did have ice cream made from coca leaves (not so appetizing) and a couple of pisco sours. One place that we became obsessed with was Jack's Cafe. It's an Australian-run place that had the most AMAZING breakfasts which were worth waiting in line for! Brunch culture doesn't really exist in South America so Jack's was a major treat for us--especially after having had to monitor everything we ate when we were sick in Bolivia. I would always get a lemonade that was blended with fresh mint and Brigid and I usually shared the vegetarian breakfast (eggs, toast, beans, tomato, avocado and grilled haloumi) and a plate of cinnamon french toast.
When we were in Lima it was lovely to be back down at a lower altitude and by the sea. We were staying in a neighbourhood called Barranco and we stumbled across a restaurant that's a local lunchtime hot-spot for ceviche. I think it was called La Canta Rana and it just had a really warm and lively atmosphere. There were photos of friends and family all over the walls, they had a big screen setup that was showing the final game of the Copa America, and it was so packed that we shared a table with a professional juggler and his grandmother who were both lovely. It was such a charming place and the food was so fresh and flavourful--probably one of my favourite dining experiences to date!
Our time in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru was amazing and I really hope to be able to go back one day with a bit more time and a greater grasp of the language. There is so much to see and it's definitely an area worth checking out if you've never been. Hope you enjoy the photos!
Ahhh civiche, one of my favorite latin dishes, I ate a lot of that in my travels as well. I hear they do it a little differently in Peru though. Maybe we'll make some in Montreal when you're around!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. You love architecture huh? I can tell by your pictures! Talk to you soon!

Australian-Peruvian french toast sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'd forgotten that Paddington (the bear) is actually from Peru. Any marmalade there?
